My Opinion of My Cuisinart CBK-200 Bread Machine by Robin OBrien
After many years of loyal service my old Zojirushi bread machine stopped working. I thought about replacing with its newer model but in the end I decided to buy the Cuisinart CBK-200 instead. I think it was mainly down to how it looked and, apart from some gripes, I'm glad I did.
My first complaint was when I took it out of its box. I found that there were still little bits of white plastic attached to its outer casing. I'm assuming the thin plastic was to protect the brushed stainless steel exterior from being damaged or scratched during manufacture but I did feel a little annoyed that I had to finish the job of removing it; if I hadn't, the plastic would have melted on to the surface of the appliance, there by ruining what it was supposed to protect. The appliance was also a little 'dusty' and need to be cleaned.
Still, a minor issue and the Cuisinart bread machine did look very nice on my kitchen counter. I really like its chic, good looks.
Most times, I bake a simple white loaf - nothing fancy - and what's really nice about the Cuisinart breadmaker is that the default setting is for a 2lb, white loaf baked with a medium crust - exactly how I like it - so, you just add in the ingredients and press 'Start'. However, one of the main reasons I bought this machine over other brands was because of its unique convection fan. The company claimed in its advertising that this feature produces more evenly browned crusts that are crispier. Well, I can vouch that it does. However, I found out that when you use the convection option, you should never leave the bread in the pan; take it out immediately or the steam released from the loaf will soon turn the crust from crispy to soft.
Another thing I really like about it is that it has an audible alarm to let you know that you can remove the mixing paddle before it begins to bake the bread. My pet peeve about all bread machines is that you have to 'dig out' the paddle after baking; a real chore that always leaves a large hole in the middle of the loaf.
But be warned; the audible signal is quite load and you can't turn it off. You can turn off the signal that tells you when you can add in other ingredients, like nuts and so on, but you can't turn of the paddle signal; a little idiosyncratic.
And speaking of noise, the Cuisinart breadmaker isn't as quiet as my old Zojirushi was. The convection fan is noisy, but I guess I really shouldn't complain about that. However, I did get a start the first time I used the Cuisinart; during the kneading cycle it raises and lowers the baking bucket quickly to make sure there aren't any ingredients stuck to the sides of the bucket - I nearly jumped out of my socks first time I heard it do this.
My biggest concern with the Cuisinart CBK-200 is the pan. This is an expensive bread maker but the pan is thin and looks as though it will dent easily. Basically, it's cheap and I wonder if it will last the course. The pan in my old Zojirushi bread machine was of much sturdier construction. Also, the spring latches could be better. It's possible for the end latch and the other to be out of alignment, you just have to be a little careful when placing the pan in the machine.
But, this appliance really does come with a lot of things I like. The LCD screen is easy to read and selecting what cycle you want is straightforward; there are 16 main baking cycles including ones for low-carb, gluten free, and artisan breads. The control panel also has buttons for selecting the crust color and loaf size - it can bake 1, 1.5 or 2lb loaves. I don't need to use the low-carb or gluten free programs but I've tried the Artisan program and I was pleased with the results.
So far, I'm glad about my purchase of the Cuisinart CBK-200 bread machine and would give it a high rating. The loaves produced are consistently well baked and delicious; I just hope the pan goes the distance.
